Kenya Visa & Entry Basics

Almost everyone needs to apply for Kenya's Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online before they fly. Rules and fees shift from time to time, so check the official Kenyan immigration site, or call your nearest Kenyan embassy, before you book anything.

You'll need your passport valid for at least 6 months past your travel dates, a return ticket, and your accommodation details when you fill out the application.

If you're arriving from, or have transited through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, you'll need to show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate on arrival — this is a hard requirement, not a recommendation. Worth checking with a travel clinic a few weeks before departure regardless, since they'll also advise on routine vaccines and, if you haven't already discussed it with your own doctor, antimalarial medication for the safari areas.

At the airport — most travellers arrive through Jomo Kenyatta International in Nairobi, or Moi International if you're routing through Mombasa first — have your eTA approval and passport ready before you reach immigration; a printed copy alongside the digital one saves time if wifi or signal is patchy in the queue.

A local SIM card or eSIM is easy to sort on arrival if you want data for the trip; several kiosks operate right in the arrivals hall at both airports.
